    Librarians as Action Researchers: A Practical Framework for Evidence-Based Information Literacy Instruction

    This presentation proposes a framework for evidence-based practice for instructional librarianship drawn from discourse in education regarding the role of evidence in professional practice. We propose a framework for librarians to conceive of themselves as "action researchers": professional practitioners who (1) adhere to the best available evidence about teaching and learning; (2) methodologically test their assumptions about their practice by conducting research in their local environments; and (3) apply these learnings in their own research and instruction practices. This definition differs from the current library literature on evidence-based practice in two main ways: it provides librarians with an established theoretical framework for becoming evidence-based instructors in practice and it elevates data about student learning, rather than professional intuition or faculty perceptions, as the driving force behind our decision making as teacher-librarians. We will next discuss the major practical benefits of this framework. First, it offers librarians a practical model that can be used to professionalize their teaching. Second, this increased professionalization as educators can help librarians more successfully meet the institutional priorities of higher education, the facilitation and assessment of student learning on campus. Lastly, by seriously engaging with the craft of teaching, teacher-librarians are better equipped to become genuine co-collaborators with faculty across campus. The implications of this shift in professional ethos may be considerable; such paradigm shifts do not often occur within a community of practice quickly or without some resistance. Consequently, we will conclude our talk by noting potential challenges and offering concrete recommendations for success for instruction librarians and library leaders seeking to foster an evidence-based community of practice in their own libraries

    Study Protocol: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Patient Navigation-Activation to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities

    Abstract Background Cancer health disparities affecting low-income and minority patients are well documented. Root-causes are multifactorial, including diagnostic and treatment delays, social and financial barriers, and poor communication. Patient navigation and communication coaching (activation) are potential interventions to address disparities in cancer treatment. The purpose of this clinical trial is to test the effectiveness of an intervention combining patient navigation and activation to improve cancer treatment. Methods/Design The Rochester Patient Navigation Research Program (PNRP) is a National Cancer Institute-sponsored, patient-level randomized trial (RCT) of patient navigation and activation, targeting newly-diagnosed breast and colorectal cancer patients in Rochester, NY. The goal of the program is to decrease cancer health disparities by addressing barriers to receipt of cancer care and promoting patient self-efficacy. The intervention uses trained, paraprofessional patient navigators recruited from the target community, and a detailed training and supervisory program. Recruited patients are randomly assigned to receive either usual care (except for baseline and follow-up questionnaires and interviews) or intervention. The intervention patients receive tailored assistance from their patient navigators, including phone calls, in-person meetings, and behind-the-scenes coordination of care. A total of 344 patients have been recruited. Outcomes measured at three month intervals include timeliness of care, patient adherence, patient satisfaction, quality of life, self-efficacy, health literacy, and cancer knowledge. Discussion This unique intervention combining patient navigation and patient activation is designed to address the multifactorial problem of cancer health disparities. If successful, this study will affect the design and implementation of patient navigation programs.     Evaluating Loss to Follow-Up in Newborn Hearing Screening in a Southern State

    Objective: The aim of this study was to examine loss to follow-up on the usage of diagnostic or intervention services for South Carolina infants screened or diagnosed with hearing loss and the risk factors associated with loss to follow up. Design: A cross sectional analysis of data from South Carolina was used to examine loss to follow-up on the use of audiologic evaluation services after initial newborn hearing screening and receipt of intervention services after confirmation of hearing loss. Results: Three percent (3.1%) of all children screened in the state of South Carolina did not pass their newborn hearing screening test in 2013 with less than half (49.1%) of those children not reported to have used audiologic diagnostic services within one month of their initial screening test. Factors significant with receipt of services include birth weight, mother’s education, insurance type, and rurality. The degree of hearing loss was a significant determinant of receiving intervention at some point in time. Conclusions: The highest risk children are “lost follow-up” for both the initial diagnostic services and follow-up intervention services in South Carolina. Interventions targeted at specific groups are needed to improve the delivery of hearing services and prevent a public health shortfall

    Acute and chronic stress effects on open field activity in the rat: Implications for a model of depression

    The initial activity of a rat placed in novel surroundings (i.e., open field activity) has been taken as an indicator of its emotional state. We have investigated the effects of immediately antecedent stress upon open field activity in comparison with basal (i.e., unstressed) activity, and additionally, the effects of a history of chronic stress upon the above behavioral patterns. Acute exposure to a non-traumatic, non-debilitating stress (noise and light) consistently increased activity in comparison with basal activity. A history of chronic stress on the other hand reduced basal activity from control levels, and eliminated the activation response to acute stress. This lack of acute activation may bear some resemblance to depression on several grounds. Behaviorally it represents a "refractory loss of interest". Also, chronically stressed rats showed endocrine changes similar to those seen in human depressives. Finally, antidepressant treatment with the monoamine oxidase inhibitor pargyline restored the ability of chronically stressed rats to respond actively to stress.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/24330/1/0000597.pd

    Models for Little Rip Dark Energy

    We examine in more detail specific models which yield a little rip cosmology, i.e., a universe in which the dark energy density increases without bound but the universe never reaches a finite-time singularity. We derive the conditions for the little rip in terms of the inertial force in the expanding universe and present two representative models to illustrate in more detail the difference between little rip models and those which are asymptotically de Sitter. We derive conditions on the equation of state parameter of the dark energy to distinguish between the two types of models. We show that coupling between dark matter and dark energy with a little rip equation of state can alter the evolution, changing the little rip into an asymptotic de Sitter expansion. We give conditions on minimally-coupled phantom scalar field models and on scalar-tensor models that indicate whether or not they correspond to a little rip expansion. We show that, counterintuitively, despite local instability, a little-rip cosmology has an infinite lifetime.Comment: LaTeX, 10 pages, no figure, version to appear in Phys.Lett
